SAE launches Future Signal podcast with Dan Sultan as first guest

SAE launches Future Signal, a new podcast, featuring in-depth conversations with some of Australia's most respected artists, musicians and creative professionals.

What does it take to build a creative life?

That’s the question at the heart of Future Signal, a new podcast from SAE University College featuring in-depth conversations with some of Australia’s most respected artists, musicians and creative professionals.

Hosted by musician, producer and SAE Senior Music & Audio Lecturer Dave Turner, the podcast explores the stories behind creative careers, from the breakthroughs and setbacks to the ideas, relationships and moments that shape the work people create.

The first episode features seven-time ARIA Award winner Dan Sultan in a candid conversation spanning songwriting, family, artistic growth and the changing realities of life as a professional musician.

Recorded at Melbourne’s Aviary Studio, the episode sees Sultan reflect on a career that has taken him from independent releases and major label deals to sold out performances at the Sydney Opera House and collaborations with some of the world’s most respected songwriters and producers.

Far from a conventional career retrospective, the conversation dives into the creative mindset behind the music. Sultan speaks openly about validation, self-belief, addiction, family life and the experience of working with legendary songwriter Guy Chambers on his forthcoming album.

“Working with Guy was extremely affirming for me,” Sultan says in the episode.

"I've always known who I am as an artist. To have someone of that standing acknowledge that and want to make a record together was a really beautiful experience."
Dave Turner said, “I'm fascinated by the artistic process. I've worked in the music industry for over 20 years and have met some of the most incredible characters within our exciting industry. With Future Signal I want to give people a chance to peek into some of these backstage conversations and better understand how creative minds think about their craft. I learn something new in every conversation, I hope our audience does too."

Future Signal brings those conversations to a wider audience, exploring not just what creative professionals make, but how they think, how they collaborate and how they navigate an industry that never stands still.

While the first season focuses on music and audio, future episodes will expand into film, animation, visual effects, games and other creative disciplines.
