WAM Awards… the night of POW!
4 Nov 2016
Perth's music scene was a buzz last night with the annual Western Australian Music (WAM) Awards. As an Associate Partner of the WAM Awards, SAE Institute was beyond thrilled and proud as punch to see our SAE graduates and lecturers scoop a bounty of awards!
Fremantle band POW!Negro was stoked to take out not one, but two publically voted WAM Awards, Most Popular New Act & Most Popular Live Act.

The SAE connection
If a band’s name is anything to go by then you’ll be sucker punched by the super-powerful live set of POW!Negro. The energetic band known to POW-ify all venues they perform at, is led by the amped-up, master MC Nelson Mondlane. POW!’s drummer is none other than SAE Perth Audio graduate Rhys Hussey, otherwise known as Radioactive Energy-man (each member of the band has a superhero name!).
Rocking stages across Fremantle and Perth with their dynamic live show, the six-piece band bring in drums, bass, guitar, sampler and sax to serve up the fused sounds of hip-hop, jazz, psychedelia, grunge and soul music, with grooves sure to get bodies moving.

Having only formed in late 2015, the band’s sound reflects the energy and momentum with which it began – fast and friendly. 2016 has been the year of POW! with the band making great movements in the live music scene, supporting the brilliant Sampa The Great, Remi, Spit Syndicate, Koi Child and winning The Big Splash band competition.
“For the majority of our performance I’m on drums, but half way through the set we all change up. All six members of POW! have very individual styles of playing, you can see this in our live show. The bassist goes to drums, as the main drummer I move to guitar and the guitar heads over to bass. I feel really lucky to be apart of a project with so many multi-instrumentalists!” said Rhys.
Graduating with a Diploma of Sound Production (Studio Production), Rhys said, “The main reason I wanted to move into a career in music was basically because it was the one thing I knew a lot about! I’m hooked on creating music, performing live and connecting with other artists.”
Marked as one of the most exciting and unique new breeds of Perth bands emerging on the scene, POW!Negro are busy recording and producing their debut EP, and instead of outsourcing the job, they’re doing it all themselves! Using their combined skills in audio production, all the songs are being tracked and mixed by POW! with the assistance of Sam Cutri, Audio Lecturer at SAE Perth.
“Sam is an amazing lecturer! I honestly would not have taken on the POW!Negro EP if it wasn’t for the skills and confidence he imparted during my studies,” said Rhys.
“SAE is honestly such a hub for energetic, proactive thinkers. I can’t wait to study there again!”
With the band’s debut album due for release in 2017, POW!Negro have some amazing shows coming up. First up is their new single Hidle Ho launch on November 25 at Mojos Bar in Fremantle. They’re also performing alongside one of POW!’s largest musical influences, Blackalicious, an amazing American hip hop artist, at the Perth International Arts Festival (PIAF) on February 11, with tickets available here.
