If winners are grinners then Sam Ellard and Einar Eyland are beaming from ear to ear.

The students won SAE Institute’s 'Win the chance to represent SAE at Splendour' competition run on social media #saesplendour. The competition offered one film and one audio student, from any SAE Institute campus across Australia, to represent SAE at Splendour in the Grass.

Sam, a Diploma of Sound Production (Live Sound) student from Perth, and Einar, a Bachelor of Film student from Sydney, were flown to Byron Bay to go behind-the-scenes and experience first-hand what it takes to work at one of Australia’s largest music festivals.
For Sam, the internship at Splendour is an experience he will never forget.
“At Splendour, I had the opportunity to help setup and talk to members from some of my favourite bands. Seeing Gang of Youths play absolutely blew me away!” said Ellard.

Einar was also blown away by the production involved with filming the event. He said, “I wasn’t aware of how many professionals are employed to make sure every detail is considered and to make it a great event.”
A memorable moment for Einar was when he was allowed to wander around the festival site with the Sony A7S and a camera rig, filming heaps of B roll footage during what he called “the golden hour”.
Sam brought real-world training to the festival from working at the Rosemount Hotel, as part of the Live Sound Diploma at SAE Perth.
“I was able to get some really good practical advice from sound engineers working the festival. Being on the ground and getting myself out there was incredibly valuable for me in terms of moving forward with my career as a ‘front of house’ sound engineer,” said Ellard.
The Bachelor of Film degree at SAE Sydney provided Einar with industry-ready skills he’d acquired during his studies from Trimester 1 through to his current Trimester 5.
“All of the camera work that I have been doing while at SAE clearly made everything really easy for me at Splendour. The in-depth learning on the Adobe programs also made the editing really easy,” said Eyland.

Einar also noted some sage advice for students undertaking work placement.
“Do not be shy! Be vocal and ask as many questions as you can to get as much out of it as you can!”
