SAE KEEPS WARM IN THE BEDROOM AT UMBRELLA WINTER SOUNDS FESTIVAL

23 Jul 2019

Umbrella Winter City Sounds, a festival presented by Music SA and sponsored by SAE Creative Media Institute has just wrapped up its 17 day festival program.

One of the curated events on the program was the SAE presented Rundle Mall Producer Series, a pop up installation in the centre of busy Rundle Mall where music producers worked in a purpose built ‘bedroom’, simulating the private creative process of making music in their bedrooms at home.

The Producer's Series 'Bedroom' in Adelaide's Rundle Mall

Over three days, The Producer Series opened up the very insular world that many solo music producers experience and invited the public to watch and listen on the inbuilt headphones as they worked.

Part musical performance, part performance art, The Producer Series was headed up by Adelaide’s own Luke Million and featured sessions by other local musicians. Based on the lived experiences of music producers, passers-by were able to get a revealing glimpse into the perspex walled ‘bedroom’ recording studio as the artists worked in the simulated environment they find most creatively conducive and comfortable.

In one session of The Producer Series, SAE Audio Lecturer James Chang was joined by Diploma of Music Industry student Katherine Dawson in the makeshift bedroom studio where they recorded and produced a track live to the Rundle Mall crowd.

Katherine said the experience was almost surreal. "I felt like a musical goldfish in a bowl looking out! It was fun to catch people on the street and to draw them in with our music to listen to us on the headphones.”

SAE Campus Manager Johann Dreyer said that a festival such as Umbrella is a treasured part of the cultural ecosystem in SA. “SAE Adelaide is extremely proud to be collaborating with Music SA and Umbrella Festival, showcasing some of the great talent we have in Adelaide. This is a great opportunity to experience what we teach at SAE and what it's really like to produce music.”

SAE Adelaide offers Certificate III and Diplomas in Audio, Live Sound and Electronic Music Production.
