SAE audio student tops Soundcloud worldwide chart

20 Dec 2018

SAE Melbourne student Simon Reich has just made it to No#1 on the worldwide Jazz & Blues Soundcloud chart with his track Too Soon. We had a chat to him about his musical career and study life.

Who inspires your work? Anyone that performs their art with passion & honesty. People who polish up their performances to the point that it comes across as plastic sounding, turn me off. I’d rather hear a raw, heartfelt act. That’s the type of artist that really inspires me, no matter what genre.

What do you love about Audio? Music has been a part of my life since I was a child. I don’t let a day go by without playing some sort of musical instrument. Sometimes while listening to music, I get a strong emotional response. This is why I love audio, as I can use it to move people in so many different ways.

What do you enjoy most about studying at SAE Melbourne? The first answer to this question is the talented & vibrant lecturers. They are so inspirational & always make themselves available to us. The second answer to this question is the creative community within the campus. Collaborating with other audio students & the wide variety of other disciplines at SAE, has put me in touch with people I hope to remain in contact with throughout my professional life.

What is your favourite software and hardware you use? I’ve been using Pro Tools for nearly 10 years now, so another attraction of the course, was it’s focus on this iconic program. After all these years, I had only scratched the surface of it’s uses, so being here has taught me so many unused sections of the program I didn’t even know it had.

In this case, I believe I will always be discovering new things that Pro Tools has to offer & with new updates coming out every few years, I’m sure to never need another Digital Audio Work Station in my lifetime. Because I have been playing music all my life, my list of hardware is immense, but my favourites are my classic, vintage keyboards. Rhodes electric piano, Roland Juno 106 & Yamaha DX7 FD. I also own a Fender Stratocaster, Mesa Boogie guitar amplifier & Roland RD 700GX weighted 88 note keyboard.

What are your study highlights? Recording solo artists & bands in the various studios throughout the campus. Nothing beats turning those amazing live performances into finished recorded masterpieces.

What projects are you working on at the moment? I just finished a sample library of drum hits & cymbal flourishes that I then used on a jazz piano tune. I was very excited to see this recorded piece race up the Soundcloud new & hot worldwide jazz & blues chart, to number one & remain there for a week.

What are your goals after finishing your studies at SAE? I sold my signwriting business & enrolled into college, so I now earn my living totally from music.

At the moment I compose & record music for short films & ads, so the reason for attending was to expand my knowledge in the recording process, principles of sound, digital manipulation of audio files & to make relationships / contacts with up & coming film makers.

This trimester proved to be a success in the last category, as part of my study in music, I provided soundtracks for 3 projects of other student’s short films, animations & title credits.

Upon finishing my studies, I want to score a full scale motion picture & am hoping to gain access to the world of studio session playing, as I believe my keyboard skills cover all genres & styles.
