Two film lecturers from SAE BrisbaneMairi Cameron and Stephen Lance, have just wrapped 21 days of filming their feature film, The Second. Directed by Mairi with Stephen as writer/producer and Leanne Tonkes as producer, The Second features a stellar all-Australian cast starring Rachael Blake, Susie Porter, Vince Colosimo, Martin Sacks and Susan Prior.

The Second is the first feature film recipient to be awarded a $1-million-dollar production budget from Screen Queensland in partnership with Australian streaming service, Stan. The 'Queensland Originals Fully Funded Features' is the first program of its kind in Australia.

Distributed through Mindblowing World, The Second will premiere across Australian cinemas with potential to be shown at film festivals around the globe, before being exclusively released to Stan subscribers in 2018.

The winning film project was announced at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival at a special event with local and international filmmakers and international sales agents. Nick Forward, Stan’s Chief Content Officer, said the streaming service was continuing to increase its output of original content, and was delighted to announce The Second as the winning feature.

“We’re delighted to see Stan’s first original film, The Second, begin production. It’s been a fantastic process working with the team at Screen Queensland and this amazing group of creatives, and we can’t wait to bring the film to Australian audiences in 2018,” said Forward.

Premier and Minister for the Arts, Annastacia Palaszczuk, announced The Second, would have its $1 million production budget fully funded by Screen Queensland as part of the government’s charge to lead Australia in innovative screen content production.

“The Queensland Government is investing in new media and digital innovation and this fantastic initiative will propel Queensland creatives into a new digital space,” the Premier said.

“The Second will receive an ‘event’ theatrical and festival release and exclusive subscription video on demand (SVOD) distribution through Stan," she said.

The psychological thriller about two female friends whose lives entwine in the pages of an elusive second novel is filmed in central Queensland’s Western Downs region at one of the nation’s most breathtakingly stunning heritage-listed properties. The ‘Jimbour House’ homestead sits on one of the earliest livestock stations, 238 km northwest of Brisbane.

Speaking of her experience on location Mairi said, “I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to collaborate with my dream cast on The Second. Each one of them brought a genuine passion for the project, and a generous helping of trust, which made it a truly collaborative experience, and also a lot of fun!”

“The crew was a unique mix of industry legends and first timers that included several SAE graduates. Along with the actors we united as one happy (albeit exhausted) family, living and shooting together in the magnificent Jimbour House.”

Director Mairi Cameron, is a prominent and well respected film producer/director known for her contribution to the Australian film industry.  Mairi’s first short Milk (1999) went on to scoop numerous accolades, it was selected to be screened in the Official Competition at Cannes Film Festival, the Montreal International Film Festival, British Short Film Festival, won prizes at the Palm Springs and Bilbao film festivals and was pre-selected for an Academy Award.

With an extensive career that includes freelance directing across a number of screen productions, TV series and commercials, Mairi has also won a Triple J Award for Best Australian Music Video (2011) for directing Megan Washington’s hit single, Sunday Best.  Just one of the many music videos she’s produced for Australian female artists, including Kate Miller-Heidke and Sarah Blasko.

Writer/Producer of The Second, Stephen Lance, made his directorial debut with the feature film My Mistress that premiered at the 2014 Melbourne International Film Festival, was nominated for the Australian Writer's Guild for Best Original Screenplay, and was one of six Australian films selected to be screened at Cinefest Oz.

Passionate about supporting the emerging generation of filmmakers, Mairi and Stephen have lectured across a range of tertiary institutions. Mairi will return to her role as Film Department Coordinator at SAE Institute Brisbane once post-production ends.

Stay tuned for the film's official trailer to be released in the coming months!
