Fortunately, creating your USI is a simple process. Let’s dive in!
What is a Unique Student Identifier (USI)?
Your USI – or Unique Student Identifier – is a Government-issued identification number provided to students when they apply for higher education or VET studies. You only need to apply for a USI once – it’ll stay with you throughout your education journey.
Your USI is different to your SAE student number.
Can I study without a USI?
The short answer is no – you can’t study at SAE without a USI.
Since January 2023, all higher education students must have a USI to be eligible for HELP Loans and to graduate.
But don’t stress – applying for a USI is quick and easy!
How do I find my Unique Student Identifier?
Unsure if you already have a USI? If you’ve completed higher education or VET studies from 2015 onwards, you may already have a USI.
Head to the Australian Government’s USI website to use their registry and see if you can track it down.
How can I create my USI number?
To create a USI, visit the Student Portal on the USI website and fill out the application form.
How long does it take to get a USI?
Creating your USI takes around five minutes. Make sure you have a form of ID ready, such as your Australian passport, birth certificate or driver’s license.
Do I need to do anything else after I get my USI?
Once you’ve received your USI as a domestic student, you’ll be prompted to provide it to us when you complete your enrolment form. Alternatively, our team may ask you for permission to look up your USI on your behalf.
If you’re a continuing or international student, our Student Services team will be in touch via phone or email to follow up on your USI.
