SAE’s Guide: Your Tax File Number (TFN)

As a new SAE student, navigating the world of higher education can be overwhelming, particularly when it comes to paying your fees. We’re here to break the process down step by step, starting with your Tax File Number (TFN).

Let’s explore what a TFN is, why SAE needs a copy of it, and how you can apply for one (don’t worry – it’s super quick!).

What is a Tax File Number (TFN)?

A Tax File Number (TFN) is your personal reference number used for tax, superannuation and government payments. You’ll only ever have one TFN, even if you change jobs or move overseas.

Why does SAE need my TFN?
To apply for the Australian Government’s Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) – which lets you defer your tuition fees until after you’ve completed your studies and begin earning a salary above the payment threshold – you’ll need to submit your Tax File Number as part of your application.

This application is called an Electronic Commonwealth Assistance Form (eCAF).

Can I apply for an eCAF without my TFN?
Technically, yes. While you don’t need your nine-digit Tax File Number to submit your eCAF, you will need to provide a Certificate of Application to show us that your TFN is on the way from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

You’ll still need to provide us with your TFN as soon as you receive it. Please email your TFN to [email protected].

How do I get a copy of my Tax File Number?
You can find your TFN on any correspondence you’ve received from the ATO, by accessing your MyGov account (if your ATO account is linked), or through your current or previous employer (e.g., on a payslip).

If you’re not sure of your TFN or you can’t find it, contact the ATO for assistance.

How do I apply for a TFN?

To apply for a Tax File Number, visit the ATO’s website and follow the prompts to choose the application method that suits your circumstances.

Ensure you have the necessary proof of identity documents with you, including certified copies if needed.

Applying for a TFN is free. Your request will be processed by the ATO and you should receive your Tax File Number within 28 days.
