Bio
My name is Reney Karamoy. I currently live In Jakarta, Indonesia, making music with my band SCALLER while producing and being a freelance Audio Engineer. My works are featured in local and international media such as Bandwagon, Rolling Stone Indonesia, Jakarta Post and CDC Radio.
What inspired you to enter into the career you’re in?
Music has always been a big part of my life. I studied classical guitar when I was 10, spent most of my teenage years playing clubs and cafes until my partner and I decided to go down music industry road by making our original music. I always had a desire of making music in the studio. I find that the vibration amongst people in the recording process can formulate magic and eventually become a great record. That obsesses me, so it’s always been music. There’s no plan B.
What are your fondest memories of your time at SAE?
The idea of studying at SAE Melbourne seemed pretty daunting for me at first. Coming from a country that speaks a different language and has a different culture, I had mixed feelings of studying Australia. But when the course started, I was proven otherwise. All the lecturers and staff at SAE Melbourne are very nurturing and they made sure that I got everything I needed to support my study.
That time period was what I would call a life-changing moment. The curriculum at SAE makes whole lot of sense to me. As a self-motivated person, i find that this learning method is very effective. I also had a very productive knowledge exchanges through group-work and interactive collaborations with my peers during study at SAE.
Are you able to shed some light on how studying at SAE lead you to where you are now?
I guess it’s safe to say that studying at SAE has given me a head start in the music industry. Not only that, I received a skill set in Studio Production which enables me the fundamentals of making great records, but also the value of embracing others’ opinion and being reasonable. Because that matters in the creative process.
What are your career highlights?
I went back straight to my country Indonesia right after I graduated. For the sake of continuing the music career that I left while studying at SAE. From the time period of 2015 up until today, my main focus has been making music and touring with my band SCALLER. We managed to give birth to an EP “1991” and a full- length album “Senses” and are extremely grateful to be nominated and awarded on several occasions by Indonesian Choice Awards as “Breakthrough artist 2016” Rolling Stone Indonesia as “Rookie of the year 2017” also were on “Top 3 Indonesian Albums 2017”. “Senses” also gave me the opportunity to work with Grammy award winning Mastering Engineer Brian Lucey.
What projects are you working on at the moment?
I’ve spent the past 2 years focusing on workshop for the upcoming album with my band SCALLER while also working on some experimental projects.
What advice would you give to students aspiring to become successful in their field?
Well, it depends on how you measure success. Speaking from my experience, I would say stick to what you believe in and focus on that while being open to new ideas and work towards good attitude. They have to come first, then success will follow.
