NAME: Nicolai Heinze
CAMPUS: Brisbane
DISCIPLINE: Bachelor of Film

What do you most enjoy about student life at SAE?

I love that SAE is a place for creative people. Meaning that you will always work or talk with creative people and everyone’s “weirdness” is accepted because creative people are a bit weird but we are all with creative people so it is okay to be weird around campus and be yourself and follow your creative intentions and dreams.

What are your plans for when you graduate?

I want to get more experience in cinematography and on sets. I plan on doing more internships and stay in Australia at least for a while and in the future I want to look into going to Canada or America or Japan to keep making film projects. I am also very interested in underwater cinematography.

Could you please tell us a little about your involvement with SAE campus life?

During my studies at SAE, I spend either a lot of time on campus or barely time on campus. But the time I spend a lot of time on campus I always tried to help others if help was needed, was interested in other people’s projects and had fun exchanging ideas with other creative people. Furthermore, I helped out on every Info Night, Open Day, or Synergy since I have started my studies and through that had the opportunity to grow closer with my facilitators, staff and introduce possible new students to SAE and do that out of the perception of an international student.

I have also been a member of the Student Council and through that had the opportunity to have an impact on the campus itself, help students in difficult situations and in general enhance my skill set even more and also outside of the creative media area.

Have you studied previously?

No. I have only traveled Australia for a year before I started studying.

What do you enjoy most about your discipline?

I love film because you can make anything that pops into your mind visible on screen. It is so creative and the only limitation is your imagination. I love to meet a lot of different creative minds and individuals and exchange those thoughts and work towards something amazing.

What is your favourite software you use?

I enjoy using Premier Pro, Photoshop and Davinci Resolve for any work that I do because they are industry standard and I am very confident in using those softwares.

What is your favourite hardware you use?

I don’t think I have a favourite Hardware to use yet. I love to learn always and learn about new things so getting something new to work on and to use is always very exciting to me.

What projects have you worked on?

I have worked on a music video as our graduation project called “Dream” which still has to be published. Furthermore, I have worked on a podcast about minorities in the creative media industry.

I also loved the Noir-Themed TVC I have shot in cooperation with Lachlan Erhart, Abdul Asif Kahn, and Fynn Birch for “DocBrown” Coffee in Westend.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to SAE?

Come with an open mind, don’t be afraid of mentioning your creative ideas. After all, you are with very creative people and you will always find someone who wants to work on your project with you. Be yourself and develop your creativity and your passion and don’t be afraid of it because everyone is accepted on the campus and staff is always happy to help and give advice. After all, they are also very creative people.

What is the best fun fact about yourself?

I have a very loud laugh. Like friends told me when I laugh and they haven’t seen me or didn’t know I was around they could tell that I was there. That’s how loud and distinguishable my laugh is.
