At SAE, you’ll gain hands-on experience with industry-standard equipment and graduate with a portfolio of work that helps you stand out from day one.

Film crews include creative leads like the Producer, Director, and Director of Photography, alongside teams for camera, lighting, sound, art direction, costume, and make-up. Other essential roles include Assistant Directors, Script Supervisors, Grips, Gaffers, and post-production specialists like Editors and Colourists. Each department also includes junior roles, assistants, and trainees who support the team throughout the shoot.

Common entry-level roles include Production Assistant (runner), Camera or Sound Trainee, Art Department Assistant, and Edit Assistant. These positions provide hands-on experience and help build an understanding of set protocols, communication practices, and the rhythm of a shoot. Most of these roles are freelance and short-term but can lead to long-term crew opportunities.

Yes. Most jobs in editing, post-production, and even on set expect you to be familiar with tools like Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or After Effects. At SAE, you’ll gain hands-on experience with these programs as part of your coursework, giving you practical knowledge that’s directly applicable to the workplace.

Salaries vary based on role, experience, and project size. In Australia, entry-level crew might earn between $50,000 and $60,000 a year, while experienced crew and heads of department may earn between $80,000 and $110,000. Senior producers and technical specialists can earn above $125,000. Rates are often set by union agreements, with extra pay for overtime and allowances depending on the job.
