‘VISUALISE YOUR VOICE’ IS HERE TO ADDRESS DIVERSITY IN THE FILM INDUSTRY

12 Feb 2019

The Melbourne Women of Film Festival (MWFF) returns the on the 21st - 24th of February for the third year, continuing to celebrate and support the work of women filmmakers and creatives – from directors, writers and producers to cinematographers, sound designers and editors.

A key part of this year’s program will see Festival Director Sian Mitchell engaging with culturally diverse young women aged 15-19 years through the Visualise Your Voice Workshop. Sian, who is also a film lecturer at SAE Creative Media Institute in Melbourne, says that the workshops are an extension of MWFF’s broader objectives to ensure representation within film transcends more than gender alone.

“Visualise Your Voice wants to address diversity issues in on-screen and behind the camera representation. This isn’t just the discrepancy for women in film, but the imbalance of racial, social and LGBTQI+ voices in film,” Sian says.

With a focus on storytelling, the participants will learn under the guidance of professional screen industry practitioners and educators, having the opportunity to experience different creative roles and use industry-standard equipment as part of the one day workshop. The three workshop mentors are also role models of diverse experience, with varied cultural and professional backgrounds.

“It is important to engage with women at this age, to instill a sense of confidence and to let them know their stories matter too, we aim to achieve this through early intervention,” Sian says.

The program making its debut this year, Visualise Your Voice has been developed as part an education stream in MWFF, engaging with local schools and community centres. Supported by the Lord Mayors Charitable Foundation, Sian hopes to expand Visualise Your Voice in following years to reach young creatives in Greater Melbourne and Regional Victoria.

A free event, Visualise Your Voice will be held SAE Melbourne campus on Saturday 23rd of February. To register your interest or find out more please visit https://mwff.org.au/visualise-your-voice Or
