SPLENDID TIMES HAD AT SPLENDOUR 2019
5 Aug 2019
We are all catching our breath after another spectacular Splendour in the Grass. 16 SAE Film and Audio students were on site honing their live music, broadcast and production skills with the best in the business.
The SAE crew were in the thick of it in the best way possible. For the audio team, backstage was a hot and sweaty flurry of activity, all moving parts but running smooth like a well-oiled machine. The beat thuds as the soundtrack to their hectic work and while rubbing shoulders with the artists backstage they need to keep their cool, there’s no time to be star struck!
It can’t be denied that the Splendour crowd loves a camera and the film crew had no issues finding willing subjects to capture. It was a dream film setting with interesting characters and lots of action everywhere you looked.
We chatted to some of our talented students about their Splendour experience.
Nick SAE Byron Bay Film Student
“I was working at the amphitheatre stage filming the artists and live streaming their performance to the crowd.”
“This was my first time at a festival, first time broadcast filming and first time live broadcast filming and I had one hell of an experience, I got thrown on the front of house camera worth $100’000! The front of house cameras can view the whole stage, and is one of the most important pieces of equipment at the whole event. To describe the scope of the operation at the Amphitheatre, they have 12 cameras set up at various points so every inch of the stage and the band is captured.”
“There is also a film hub set up behind stage where all the magic happens, Ken the director is stationed there and I had the opportunity to operate the robo camera taking direction from him in the hub.”
Amy SAE Byron Bay Film Student
“I was part of the Splendour production team that was shooting the Oppo x Splendour promo, we were able to walk around the festival and interact with the crowd and capture the good vibes. I spent time following the director around, learning industry insider tips and tricks from him and I obviously impressed him because he offered me work placement with him in Sydney!”
“I was backstage when the interview with Foals was being filmed and the band came up and introduced themselves to me. I couldn’t believe it, it was such an incredible moment!”
Joel SAE Byron Bay Audio student
“Working backstage with the Splendour team I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of well regarded people on the industry.”
“Of course the bands and the music is just incredible, and to witness Splendour, to just be here, let alone be a small part of putting it together, it is just simply amazing!”
Pedro SAE Byron Bay International Film Student
International student Pedro originally hails from Peru, but has traveled the world. Settling in Byron for the time being to study, Pedro jumped at the opportunity to hone his skills at the Amphitheatre stage.
“While I have worked in events for years in different roles, this is the first time that I have been able to be at a festival and use my passion for film. The networking opportunities here at Splendour are invaluable and I’m asking everyone questions every chance I get.”
“Although I enjoy all the roles in film, I’m most interested in being a producer, to get the best of the best within the allocated budget. After I graduate I want to start doing my own documentaries and I have already been working on campaigns with local social enterprises in Byron, I believe in harnessing the power of filmmaking to reach people.”
“I love SAE because it is global. I love the Byron location but I also appreciate that I can have the option to transfer to the Sydney or Melbourne campuses too”
Jan and Chelsea Melbourne Audio Students
Jan and Chelsea were so keen to come to Splendour this year they approached their local campus Industry Liaison Coordinator Chris, armed with their resumes to see if they could get a coveted spot on the crew. Lucky for them there were 2 spots available and before they knew it they were on a plane to Byron to work on the biggest festival of the year.
Jan and Chelsea were lucky enough to be mentored at the amphitheatre stage by Susie Youl, Susie attended Splendour last year as an SAE crew student intern and now has a paid gig as part of the backstage audio team.
JAN “The highlight of the festival has definitely been interacting with the Splendour crew backstage.”
CHELSEA “Yeah, being on stage crew with other women in the industry is really inspiring, as is meeting Susie Youl from SAE Melbourne who has gone onto achieve her dream.”
JAN “It’s actually been really chill and it’s awesome that as Melbourne students we also got the chance to come up here.”
CHELSEA “The experience has been absolutely incredible, even though were are staying on site in the tent you wake up full of energy, so keen to be here.”
Casimir (Dan Musgrave SAE Byron Bay Marketing Officer)
Premiering new music exclusively at Splendour, Casimir brought a unique Berlin underground sound to the Tipi Forest and the enthusiastic crowd were loving every second of the set.
“Although this was my 6th time playing Splendour, it was definitely the most special. Something magical happens in Tipi Forest and the crowd is always up for a good time so it's always sick to be invited to play there, I hope to do it again and again!”
While out and about wearing our SAE crew shirts, lots of festival revellers came up to our students and staff to have a chat about how either they or someone they knew attended SAE campuses around the country. The Splendour crowd comes from far and wide and so does the SAE crew! We heard lots of great stories about you, and people you know, studying with us and we are so thankful to everyone that came up to have a chat and to share their experience.
And who can forget the reason why we were all here.. The music of course! Our faves? We loved Foals, Little Simz, The Rubens performing with G Flip, our friends Casimir and Couples Therapy, SZA, Friendly Fires, Hatchie and we are still talking about that incredible Childish Gambino performance!
Well from us, we are tired but satisfied with a job well done and we just can’t wait to do it all again in 2020.
