GEARING UP FOR THE BYRON BAY WRITERS' FESTIVAL

4 Jul 2014

"If there's a story to be told and if the story has some validity, some resonance, then you don't keep it to yourself" -From Stories We Tell by Canadian Film Director Sarah Polley

Film students at SAE Byron Bay attended an event briefing today in preparation for the upcoming Byron Bay Writers' Festival. The students will be involved in filming workshops and panel discussions featuring some of Australia's greatest writers and thinkers including Bob Brown, Tim Flannery, Andrew Denton, Julian Burnside AO QC, John Saffran, Missy Higgins, Richard Clapton, Geoff Dyer and British author Jeanette Winterson.

Our crew of six students will film nominated sessions, record vox pops with festival attendees and shoot B-Roll footage, then they will work together to write a script, edit all the footage together and produce a 3 minute promotional video for the Byron Bay Writers Festival.

Senior film lecturer, Anne Chesher (pictured above) is particularly interested in the program sessions focussing on the future of the screen industry and merging platforms:

-When Media Empires Fall: The Inside Story
-Idiot Boxing: Andrew Denton & Andrew Knight;

and the SAE Byron Bay sponsored session entitled Our Story: Film and National Identity featuring screenwriter Terry Hayes, scriptwriter Andrew Knight and screenwriter and director John Weiley.

Four workshops from the Festival's program will be hosted onsite at SAE Byron Bay's beautiful campus.
