ABOUT CARDIN

What do you most enjoy about student life at SAE?

There’s a close-knit community at SAE. Everyone is a friend in a way, always willing to help out and talk. The teachers included, they are happy to give their time and lend a hand in any way they can.

What are your plans for when you graduate?

I want to continue my internship and gain as much experience as possible. I’m hungry to learn more so I will be spending a lot of my time working to improve myself and my design skills. Hopefully, this gradually moves into freelance work. I eventually want to move into the art installation space so will always be working towards achieving this.

Can you share an artist or professional in your discipline that inspires you?

There’s a lot. Currently, my mentor is Ben Wright from Pretty-Soon in Perth. He is amazingly knowledgeable and has been so welcoming to teaching me while I intern.

Sam Price is an amazing 3D based artist who’s done some amazing work in Perth.

Tim Meakins is a graphic designer and visual artist who has an amazing message behind his personal work and is genuinely just a great dude.

There’s many more, even from Perth but that would be a book in itself.

Could you please tell us a little about your involvement with SAE campus life?

I’m a full-time student at SAE Institute in Perth. I’ve developed a great relationship with many students and teachers. It’s a great space to learn and grow creatively. There are so many people with so many different passions, it really is a creative melting pot.

Cardin

Have you studied previously?

I have a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Physiology

What do you enjoy most about your discipline?

The realisation that design is involved in and applicable to everything we see and consume. It’s the effect on the cognitive process that amazes and thoroughly intrigues me

What is your favourite software you use?

Right now it is Adobe Photoshop. It has taken a while but I finally have a solid handle on the software and a good workflow.

What is your favourite hardware you use?

My MacBook Pro Laptop has been by my side for the entirety of degree. It’s a faithful companion at this point.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to SAE?

Find what you like, the thing you genuinely want to learn to do and run after it. Learn as much as you can. Do what makes you hungry to learn more and more.

What is Orientation and the first day of SAE like?

For me, SAE is a very welcoming space. Everyone is enthusiastic about what they want to do so it seemed like a very positive space.

Do you have any helpful tips to share with fellow students?

Being bad at something is the first step to being good. Don’t get disheartened when you can’t do something straight away. The work of your idols took years if not decades to get to that level. Learn, work, refine, repeat.

Also, be mindful. Take care of yourself. Know when you need to take time for yourself and know that it’s ok to take this time.

What is the best fun fact about yourself?

I’m a dancer and I teach kids and teens.

What have you accomplished that you are most proud of?

Making the decision to start and finish this degree after a long time both in and out of uni.

Who are 3 people you would invite to dinner, dead or alive?

Anderson .Paak, Masego, James Blake.
