Overview

NYX is an album mixed, mastered and recorded by Lara Valentine and Will Lobb, audio students from SAE Sydney.

The album’s title, NYX, is inspired by the Greek goddess of the night, one of the primordial gods who emerged at the dawn of creation. On the NYX album, the mixing and mastering were shared with Lara completing five tracks and Will doing the other five.

As Lara recalls, “Most of the software instruments and synths were done at Will’s home studio while other instruments such as vocals, guitar and bass were tracked on campus at SAE. We also recorded live drums, played by Tristan Kenny at Def Wolf Studios.”

“Within the recording process, we used a variety of different outboard gear and microphones which suited the sound we were after; from vintage Neve preamps to more modern gear like the SSL Fusion. For the gear head, the microphone selection would be a thrilling sight as the selection used was truly amazing.

Neumann U87’s to SM7’s, Royer 121 to standard 57’s, we really took advantage of the variety we had at hand.”
