We all have two ears and one mouth for a reason: we have to listen twice as much as we speak - and that's the essence of being a good documentary filmmaker.

Dr Magali McDuffie is the department coordinator for film at SAE Perth.

With over fifteen years of experience working in culturally diverse regional and remote projects both as a filmmaker and academic researcher, Magali’s films have been screened on Australian National Television, Indigenous Community Television, and numerous national and international film festivals. Magali also has 10 years of experience in the education industry, having worked as a lecturer and unit coordinator at the University of Canberra, prior to starting at SAE.

Magali’s research focus has been on collaborative and participatory filmmaking, particularly with Indigenous communities, using the camera as a listening tool for marginalised voices to be heard, and she has presented and published extensively on the subject. Magali has continued to work closely with many remote communities in the Australian Kimberley and Pilbara regions, as a Community Media Trainer with PAKAM, training community members in video production and editing, and in her role as a filmmaker, researcher and consultant with community organisations such as Madjulla, Inc., and the Martuwarra Fitzroy River Council (ongoing).

Magali has worked at SAE since 2019, and in her position as Film Department Coordinator at the Perth campus, Magali has striven to build partnerships with not-for-profit and community organisations for SAE students to gain work experience in real-world contexts. For her efforts in promoting strong and long-lasting community partnerships, Magali received the SAE Australasia Community Engagement Award in 2019. Magali became Chair of the Film Course Committee in 2020 and in October 2021, Magali took up a 6-months secondment opportunity as the Academic Coordinator of the SAE Jakarta Campus.

Magali McDuffie has completed the following qualifications:
PhD (Indigenous Studies) ANU
GradCert (Applied Anthropology) UWA
Masters of Arts (Film & Television) Bond University
Masters of Arts (Languages and Linguistics) Translation, UCO, France
UnivCert (Business) British Chamber of Commerce
