Bio

Former SAE Adelaide student Emma Sainsbury, also known as ‘Eluize’, is a vibrant artist who has taken her music far and wide, including to Berlin where she now resides. After completing a Diploma of Audio in 2010 she has worked as a music producer, radio producer, sound designer, music stylist, audio engineer, promoter, booker and programmer for venues, tour manager, logistics manager for a booking agency, label manager, artist agent and many other roles within the industry.

What inspired you to enter into the career you’re in?
I was interested in writing electronic music, so I did the short course in Electronic Music Production and really enjoyed it. I decided to continue and do the Diploma in Audio Engineering. The structure of the course worked well with my life and work, the content was in line with what I wanted to learn and the staff and lecturers at SAE Adelaide were great, knowledgeable and supportive.

What are your fondest memories of your time at SAE?
The support from the team at the Adelaide campus was really amazing, I still talk with my lecturers now and I think that’s pretty special. The topics they covered gave me a great knowledge base across a lot of things, so I could choose what areas of music and production I wanted to focus on after the course. It’s such a broad industry with so much information to learn, it was good to break in and make a start.

Are you able to shed some light on how studying at SAE lead you to where you are now?
When I started at SAE I was a DJ and classical instrumentalist, since the course I’ve worked as a music producer, radio producer, sound designer, music stylist, audio engineer, promoter, booker and programmer for venues, tour manager, logistics manager for a booking agency, label manager, artist agent and many other roles within the industry. I moved to Sydney for three great years after I finished the course, and then to Berlin. I’ve lived here now for almost 3 years and I am a full time artist, DJ, Producer and soon to be record label founder.

What are your career highlights?
I run a regular party here at a club called Farbfernseher in Kreuzberg called ‘Moonlighting’, (my obsession with tides and the night continues). After promoting parties and booking artists for years in Sydney, I was hooked on the opportunity this gives you to invite people you like and admire to come and make a night full of moments with you and share their favourite music.

In December I’ve invited Aroma Pitch, a fantastic live techno group from Cologne to come and DJ with Gratts and I. I’ve had the opportunity to tour and travel to many countries I may otherwise have never made it to and I get to live a life of sharing wonderful music and experiences. This is what I aspired to do.

What projects are you working on at the moment?
I’m launching my own label ‘Night Tide’ in March 2016, the first release will be an EP of my own work as Eluize, plus remixes from some people I’ve met here in Berlin, Seth NK (AKA Mark Schneider) a very talented Berlin producer, and Hans Berg, a Swedish producer, also immensely talented. These guys believe in their art, they do it for the right reasons, across different genres, run their own labels as have a great energy and produce a dope sound.

I’m currently trying to find just the right designer for the logo and typography, I love fonts. I plan to make the artwork for the releases myself, I’m playing around with concepts using photography, screen printing and various other media, I really enjoy it. I do a mix project with my boyfriend and also a talented DJ Gratts (AKA Tristan), called ‘Together’. In these mixes We’re taking our passion, what we do at home and in the clubs, sharing new music we discover with people. We try to find things the other hasn’t heard, so there’s an element of surprise and reaction in the mixes.

We both come from different musical backgrounds, he grew up in Belgium and has an enviably deep knowledge of European underground electronic music, while I’m from Australia, and began more from a soul, hip hop and disco perspective. Anyway, it’s super nice to catalogue these times through these recordings. Gratts also runs a label with Belgian friend Kong called ‘ensemble’.
