Perth graduate joins Hollywood blockbuster team

30 Apr 2015

Less than three months after graduating from the SAE Creative Media Institute in Perth, Trent Dyer has landed a job with one of the world’s top digital studios.

Animal Logic is renowned for providing award-winning animation, visual effects and design for Hollywood blockbusters including The Great GatsbyWalking with Dinosaurs 3D, Happy Feet and Moulin Rouge.

Fresh from college, the 29-year-old has been engaged as an intern at Animal Logic. As a ‘render wrangler’ with the company, he is responsible for controlling the rendering process at the studio, converting computer data and outputting it as a sequence of viewable images.

Dyer completed his Bachelor of Interactive Technologies (Animation) at SAE in 2014 and was recently awarded the Institute’s prestigious accolade of ‘Most Creative Student’.

He said despite popular myth, the digital media industry was thriving and presented plenty of career opportunities for focused and determined graduates.

“I still remember my physics teacher asking me if I was sure I wanted to do 3D instead of something more stable,” Dyer said. “If only he knew how big this industry has become during the past 10 years.”

SAE is the world’s leading educator in creative media, operating 53 campuses in 27 countries and delivering courses in Animation, Audio, Design, Film, Games and Web & Mobile.

Locally, the Perth campus delivers degree and diploma courses in animation, audio, film, design and games. Students enjoy access to state-of-the-art facilities and hands-on education by industry-experienced lecturers.

All SAE degree students in Australia are required to produce portfolio projects and complete an industry internship, ensuring their readiness for the workforce.

Dyer said the Institute’s focus on real-world learning, mentoring and connecting students with industry ensured he was ready to ‘hit the ground running’. “SAE is the closest thing you’ll get to a real-world production pipeline.”

Although his lips are sealed about projects underway at Animal Logic, Dyer said big things were in store for him.

“Animal Logic has some great things coming in the future and I'm incredibly honoured and excited to be a part of the team. It’s a dream opportunity.”
