Animation

Spencer Ford, SAE Institute Animation lecturerPresenter - Spencer Ford

Before teaching Animation at SAE Perth in February 2020 Spencer was producing animations for Mill Film / MPC as a character and creature animator for feature films, such as Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Cats, Love and Monsters and an upcoming Amblin Partners film 'BIOS'.

Spencer graduated from Murdoch University with a Bachelor of Arts in Games Art & Design in 2016 to further understand the animation craft. Before studying at University Spencer’s specialization was directed toward character and creature animation and concept art/character design & character digital sculpting.

During that time he also worked within industrial digital marketing. Such as VR training programs, health and safety animation videos and mine site simulation.

During his time in the studio film industry Spencer has worked alongside artists and animators who have worked for studios such as Pixar, Walt Disney Animation, ILM, Weta, Animal Logic & Rising Sun Pictures.

Animation Masterclass

Creature Animation for VFX Films or Games

In this workshop, Spencer will be focusing on dealing with an animal animation with simple body mechanics with simple behavior in specific shots. The goal is to get more believable and realistic locomotion to get yourself into the simplest shots with a great quality.

We are going to deal with the shot as it would work in a production house, from picking up the reference approval to polishing. We will pick up some great references of walks/runs to stops/sitting/lying down positions with simple behaviors. Through animating a simple shot with simple body mechanics and behaviors, you will be learning more about bringing the realism into the creature's living and breathing moments and the true and real body mechanics of a living and breathing animal. Whether there are simple or complex shots, 'The Quality' is the same.

Film Masterclass

Fixing Film Narrative in Post Production

You’ve shot your film and started editing, but now you have a problem… the story doesn’t work. In this masterclass, you will explore some of the most common narrative issues beginner and intermediate filmmakers face in post production, and how to solve them. You will dive deep into solving problems caused by dense script exposition, problematic coverage and screen direction, not enough coverage, performance inconsistencies, poor dialogue delivery, and character inconsistencies, all while maintaining the core themes and heart of the initial story.

Stefan will walk you through how he builds on a rough cut from an SAE Capstone short film that was challenged with many of the typical issues most student films face. Throughout the course of this masterclass, you will see the film transform from a rough cut suffering from on set problems, into a narrative that works.

This masterclass is recommended for editors, directors, producers, cinematographers, or screenwriters, who want to gain a deeper understanding of narrative storytelling in film, and how to solve / prevent narrative issues. The focus of this masterclass is on story solutions, not on any particular editing software so it doesn’t matter if you use Premiere Pro, Final Cut, Avid, or any other non-linear editing program.
