Audio

Jan Muths, SAE Institute Audio lecturerPresenter - Jan Muths

Jan 'Yarn' Muths has over 20 years of experience in music production, recording and mixing across 2 continents. Jan operates his mixing business mixartist.com.au from the Byron Hinterland. He specialises in a variety of genres from Reggae and Dancehall to Hard n Heavy. Jan also hosts the Production Talk podcast, where he shares his wealth of knowledge with self-producing musicians worldwide.

From 2010-2013, Jan managed the Custom Series 75 factory in Australia. No surprise, he’s very familiar with the operation and the inner workings of large scale analogue consoles. He understands concepts such as ‘gain-staging a mix’ on a deep technical and creative level.

Nowadays, Jan mixes in-the-box only. He has a detailed understanding- where and how the analog workflows still apply in modern DAWs, and where the traditional rules can be broken. Jan is an AVID Certified Pro Tools instructor (101 - 201M), and an experienced Pro Tools operator, with a strong focus on creative and effortless workflows in music recording, music production, advanced editing, digital theory and emotion-driven mixing techniques.

Audio Masterclass - Creative and emotional mixing approaches

Learn from home how to use different DAWs for different mixing challenges. Has mixing ever felt like an uphill battle? It doesn't have to be like that. We'll focus on different mixing tasks and on establishing effective and effortless mixing workflows. Jan will give a live demonstration of mixing in Harrison Mixbus 32C and Pro Tools Ultimate, and will talk you through the typical mixing stages, eventually leading to the creative use of automation as the finishing touches of the mix. You'll learn how to process less but to mix more, how to get into the right mindset for mixing and when it’s time to call a mix 'done'.
