Perth Graduates Producing Gold at Music Awards

21 Nov 2017

SAE Perth graduates are infiltrating the vibrant West Australian music scene both centre stage and behind the scenes — and Australia is listening.

There are the ARIAs; and in Perth, there are the WAM Music Awards, which have honoured local bands that have also soared internationally, including Tame Impala, the John Butler Trio and the recent stars Methyl Ethyl. This year, four SAE alumni were nominated for awards and by the end of a smashing night, three winning awards were in the hands of SAE graduates.

Three of the many SAE alumni running their own production businesses over in WA were among the honoured for their behind-the-scenes magic while POW! Negro won Best Urban Band, after last year taking home two of the festival's popular votes.

“It’s really an honour to be recognised in Perth’s music scene; it is its own world and without its unique scene, we wouldn’t be anywhere as a band,” said Rhys Hussey, the drummer and guitarist for POW! and graduate of the Bachelor of Audio at SAE Perth. POW! Negro are far from “nowhere”: releasing a single this month and a new EP in early 2018, the larger than life band regularly tours Australia with its live performance that feels a little like a D’Angelo concert combined with a stage set at the iconic New Orleans Jazz Festival. POW! Negro write their own songs, fusing a bunch of genres – it’s hip hop, it’s reggae, it’s rock, it’s psychedelia and a bit of blues – that they perform with massive energy.

Jeremy Beste graduated in 2009 with a Diploma of Music (Technical Production) and has become a bit of a legend around the Perth music scene — he’s been nominated several years in a row and this year, he took home the gold statue as Best Sound Engineer for live music. “Winning is an incredible honour. It’s such a huge compliment to be recognised by the industry and to have been nominated with such accomplished and incredible engineers,” Jeremy told us in the afterglow of the win. Jeremy has worked at recording studios across Perth and is now an engineer and production manager for Mojos Bar in North Fremantle. The list of bands he’s been the sound guy for would make any aspiring engineer drool, including HuskyKoichild, POW! Negro, Elli Schoen and at festivals LanewaySouthboundStrawberry Fields, Here’s to Now and more.

Also in the running was Jack Hoffmann, who graduated from SAE Perth’s Bachelor in Audio Production in 2013 and has become a main man for local production crews One20 Productions, Power Music Productions and Advanced Production Engineering. Jack is currently touring as Stage Manager around Australia and New Zealand with the band Client Liaison, which is pretty impressive at the age of 24. Jack has worked with a number of enviable artists and bands including Adam Round (Tame Impala, Pond FOH) and Jay Brandner (Drapht, Ta-ku FOH) as well as The Tea PartyDrapht, Regurgitator, Darryl Braithwaite and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.

Jeremy and Jack were joined in their nominations by fellow alumni Dave Parkin, a graduate of the Bachelor of Audio whose Blackbird Sound Studio have won Best Sound Engineer/Producer (Studio) many years previously.
