17 Nov 2016

The world of Audio is a vast and varied industry offering a multitude of job opportunities.  SAE offers Certificate, Diploma, Associate and Bachelor Degree courses at locations around Australia to equip students with the skills and industry experience they need to kickstart a career in music.

Omkar Tamhan is an International student from India who decided to study Audio at SAE Byron Bay. He chats to us about his experience as he nears completing a Bachelor of Audio.

What Trimester are you currently in?

Who inspires your work?
My Mum. She has taught me that no matter how much technology advances, ever job will always require an element of hard work and passion.

What do you enjoy most about Audio?
Creating new sonic textures and problem solving.

What do you love most about studying at SAE Byron Bay?
The staff support is fantastic. The friendly nature of everyone [at SAE Byron] is second-to-none. But most of all, I love the facilities!

What is your favourite software you use?
I would say ProTools and Logic Pro are my favourite - but mostly ProTools.

What is your favourite hardware you use?
I don’t have any one single favourite piece of of hardware, but my golden vocal chain is  “A TLM 103 with an 1176 to a manley vari Mu+ A u87(vintage) with gentle compression with the red”

What projects have you worked on, and which one are you most proud of? What did you produce in this project?
In Trimester 4, I called up some of my friends to do the most ambitious project that anyone had tried. The plan was to record four drum kits in surround and mix in 5.1 for a short film score. This was my personal homage to Hans Zimmer for his 11 drums in 7.1 for the score of Man of Steel.

Who do you follow on social media?

What are your goals after finishing studies at SAE Institute?
I have been working with some indie YouTube creators producing sound content for some time now. My future plan is to create a company for this type of work and see where things go!

What advice would you give to International students considering study at SAE Australia?
Make the most of your time here, not just with the facilities but also the people you meet and learn from. This is probably the only place where you will find like-minded creators in such huge numbers.
