COMMANDER SAM TAKES OFF AT FLICKERFEST

21 Jan 2019

This year marks the 28th Flickerfest short film festival and as tradition, the stalwart festival is heading on tour to 50+ venues across the country.  Known and loved by audiences for selecting the best of the best from around the world, the festival is both Academy® accredited and BAFTA recognised.

One Aussie short film that made this prestigious programme is Commander Sam, a story of father and daughter astronaut duo Sam and Neil. Shown in the “Best of Australian Shorts” category, the film premiered at Flickerfest’s 10 day festival in Bondi earlier this month.

Written, directed and edited by SAE Melbourne film student Liam Fouracre as the final major project of his studies, Liam led a creative team of SAE students, staff and graduates, including Director of Photography Jordan Montgomery.

Liam and Jordan say that the intention was to create a festival worthy film and Commander Sam’s selection for Flickerfest is a testament to the talented cast and crew and the countless hours put into its creation.

“Having Commander Sam play alongside other incredible films was a huge achievement for us, as young creators it means a lot for the film to be Academy® Award accredited through Flickerfest and we hope the film will continue to succeed on the festival circuit” they said.

Liam and Jordan now join other notable Flickerfest Alumni such as David Michod, Director of Animal Kingdom, Warwick Thornton from Samson and Delilah and Adam Elliot, whose entry into the 2004 Flickerfest, Harvey Krumpet went onto win the Oscar for best Animated short film that year.

SAE Melbourne Campus Manager Keiran Bartlett says having Commander Sam screening at such an iconic international festival as Flickerfest is a true testament to quality and calibre of the whole production crew.

“It's always amazing to see students work find its way onto the international stage and I am staggered by the skills Liam, Jordan and the team have exhibited. I can imagine that this film in particular will go far, but that it’s also only the beginning for these students, they have so much more to show, and much more to offer in the years to come” Keiran says.

You can see Commander Sam and other great short films at Flickerfest on tour in Melbourne on Wednesday 13th February. Tickets are available through flickerfest.com.au
