This hands-on undergraduate certificate develops students’ skills and knowledge in applying consumer-level VR and AR hardware and software to produce immersive interactive experiences. Focusing on the core technical and design considerations when working with these technologies, students will create engaging experiences that are applicable to a wide range of paraprofessional industry roles and applications in the area of health, tourism, medical, military and entertainment.
SAE has implemented a remote flexible learning option for current and future students. The range of tools developed by SAE will not only allow students to collaborate online but also gain experience in remote working practices widely used within the creative industries.

UNDERGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN AUGMENTED AND VIRTUAL REALITY APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT
The Undergraduate Certificate in Augmented and Virtual Reality Application Development enables students to learn the technical workflows associated with common augmented and virtual reality platforms, including scripting and asset pipeline; apply design and project management processes, and engage in the development of workplace skills desired by this industry.
Key modules covered within the program include:
- augmented reality (AR) technology use
- virtual reality (VR) technology use
- creative problem solving
- critical reflection
- working under supervision in a paraprofessional role
- introductory design and critical reflection processes
- technical pipelines and workflow
- introductory project management
To complement your technical skills, you will graduate with skills across:
- Employability skills specific to creative media
- Communication, including how to communicate specialist technical and creative ideas and perspectives in the graphic design discipline to others
- Introductory project management and different project management methodologies
- Teamwork and collaboration in the context of creative media
- Scholarly techniques for higher education
The Undergraduate Certificate in Augmented and Virtual Reality Application Development is an online program, supported by SAE’s Australian campus infrastructure and facilities. Students wishing to enroll in the program are advised that they will require access to the following specialised hardware and software resources to complete the projects contained within the program;
Augmented Reality Hardware:
- Window or Mac computer;
- And a modern Android smartphone.
Virtual Reality Hardware: (either Option 1 OR 2)
1. Tethered VR
- Windows PC at VR Specification
- And Oculus Rift or HTC Vive or Windows Mixed Reality Headset
2. Standalone VR
- Windows or Mac computer
- And Oculus Quest or Oculus Go
- Visual Studio
Upon completion, you will be eligible for up to 40 credit points towards the Diploma of Augmented and Virtual Reality.

SAE recognises that preparation for study is not restricted to formal educational attainment and that valuable skills development can be gained through relevant experience.
Our Experience-based Entry Scheme allows you to be considered for entry to an undergraduate course through an assessment of your ability to succeed in higher education.
SAE will review applications on a case by case basis if you:
Are at least 18 years of age
Do not have the formal qualifications required for direct entry
Seek admission to courses on the basis of your aptitude for higher learning and skills development through professional, work, life experience and non-accredited study.
To apply via Experience Based Entry, students are required to undertake an interview with an assigned representative of SAE and provide supporting evidence that may include:
Records of any formal educational qualifications attained
Evidence of any informal studies undertaken
References relating to work history relevant to the chosen field of study (if applicable)
A resume or Curriculum Vitae
A portfolio of relevant materials that demonstrates creative aptitude, knowledge, technical skills and abilities.
In addition, candidates may also be asked to undertake an exam or written assignment to satisfactorily demonstrate capacity to meet the course requirements or provide examples and/or portfolio of work.
In all cases Experience Based Entry into a Higher Education course will only be granted to students with a minimum Year 10 level of schooling.
Fees and Payments
To get a HECS-HELP loan, you must:
- be studying in a Commonwealth supported place;
- be an Australian citizen and meet the residency requirements (you must study at least part of your course in Australia); OR
- be a New Zealand Special Category Visa (SCV) holder or permanent humanitarian visa holder and meet the residency requirements;
- submit the Request for Commonwealth support and HECS-HELP form to your provider by the census date;
- be enrolled in each unit/subject at your provider by the census date;
- not have already borrowed up to your HELP loan limit;
