Entry Requirements

All applicants who wish to study at SAE will be considered on an individual basis. Whilst we do not require a minimum ATAR for any of our courses, evidence of formal educational attainment is required.

The entry requirements available to all applicant groups will depend on which course you are applying for.

 

 

Australian students

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS - HIGHER EDUCATION COURSES

ASSOCIATE AND BACHELOR DEGREE COURSES

Applicants from all applicant groups who wish to study a Associate or Bachelor degree course must satisfy one of the following entry requirements:

  1. Completion of an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (SSCE) or equivalent; OR

  2. Completion of a Diploma level qualification or higher issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF); OR

  3. Experience Based Entry  - for applicants who do not meet the requirements of entry criteria 1 or 2. Please read the section below on Experience Based Entry or contact an SAE Course Advisor directly for more information.

HIGHER EDUCATION DIPLOMA COURSES

Applicants from all applicant groups who wish to study a Diploma course at any campus (except for SAE Adelaide) must satisfy one of the following entry requirements:

  1. Completion of an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (SSCE) or equivalent; OR

  2. Completion of a Certificate IV qualification or higher issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF); OR

  3. Experience Based Entry  - for applicants who do not meet the requirements of entry criteria 1 or 2. Please read the section below on Experience Based Entry or contact an SAE Course Advisor directly for more information.

POSTGRADUATE COURSES

Applicants for Postgraduate courses must satisfy one of the following entry requirements:

  1. A completed bachelor degree or higher in media production (obtained within the last 10 years); OR

  2. Experience based entry

At least 5 years of documented relevant work experience related to media production with evidence of artistic ability and achievement or practice comparable to that of undergraduate degree holders in relevant disciplines, combined with the successful completion of year 12 or higher.

POSTGRADUATE EXPERIENCE-BASED ENTRY SCHEME

SAE recognises that learning may be acquired from both formal study and professional experience. Applicants without a Bachelor degree can apply for Experience Based Entry into the Graduate Certificate and, on completion, can apply to articulate to the Graduate Diploma or Masters.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS - VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING COURSES

DIPLOMA COURSES (Screen & Media and Audio courses offered in Adelaide)

Applicants for VET Diploma courses must satisfy one of the following entry requirements:

  1. Completion of an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (SSCE) or Equivalent; OR

  2. Completion of a Certificate IV level qualification or higher issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF); OR

  3. If options 1 and 2 cannot be met, applicants must achieve an Exit Level 3 or higher in literacy and numeracy in the Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) as demonstrated in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) as well as an Experience Based Entry meeting with an SAE representative.

CERTIFICATE COURSES

Applicants for VET Certificate courses must satisfy one of the following entry requirements:

  1. Completion of an Australian Year 10 School Certificate or equivalent; OR

  2. Completion of a Certificate II level qualification issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF); OR

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students who do not meet the Direct Entry requirements for SAE Higher Education Programs are encouraged to discuss their personal circumstances, click here for more information about experience-based applications.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING & CREDIT TRANSFERS

SAE will recognise an individual’s prior learning and may grant credit towards satisfying the requirements for a VET or a higher education program. This is applied where previous learning is considered equivalent to the content and learning outcomes prescribed for modules within the program. Experience Based Entry

SAE recognises that preparation for study is not restricted to formal educational attainment and that valuable skills development can be gained through relevant experience.

Our Experience-based Entry Scheme allows you to be considered for entry to an undergraduate course through an assessment of your ability to succeed in higher education.

SAE will review applications on a case by case basis if you:

  • Are at least 18 years of age

  • Do not have the formal qualifications required for direct entry

  • Seek admission to courses on the basis of your aptitude for higher learning and skills development through professional, work, life experience and non-accredited study.

To apply via Experience Based Entry, students are required to undertake an interview with an assigned representative of SAE and provide supporting evidence that may include:

  • Records of any formal educational qualifications attained

  • Evidence of any informal studies undertaken

  • References relating to work history relevant to the chosen field of study (if applicable)

  • A resume or Curriculum Vitae

  • A portfolio of relevant materials that demonstrates creative aptitude, knowledge, technical skills and abilities. 

In addition, candidates may also be asked to undertake an exam or written assignment to satisfactorily demonstrate capacity to meet the course requirements or provide examples and/or portfolio of work.

In all cases Experience Based Entry into a Higher Education course will only be granted to students with a minimum Year 10 level of schooling.

Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people

All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students who do not meet the Direct Entry requirements for SAE Higher Education Programs are encouraged to discuss their personal circumstances with the SAE admissions team and arrange for an interview. In addition to the elements of experience based entry, SAE acknowledges that a range of evidence including, but not limited to community engagement prior work history and family commitments can provide evidence as to a student’s suitability for entry into SAE Higher Education Programs.

Current year 12 Aboriginal and Torres Straight islanders are also encouraged to apply for our Creative Indigenous Scholarship.

International students

International students may be admitted in accordance with Government and SAE’s policies and can apply directly to SAE for admission. International students will be admitted in compliance with the ESOS Act 2000 and its Regulations 2001.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have successfully completed Secondary Studies (High School) and meet English language requirements as outlined below.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

International students have to provide additional evidence of language skills and complete one of the following:

English test scores more than two (2) years old at the time of application will not be accepted

VET CERTIFICATE COURSES

SAE does not issue an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) for certificate applications. Part-time courses can only be booked for international students if they have valid entry permission.
