Get hands-on from day one in this exciting, new and highly practical course that develops your own individual music production style. Whether you’re a electronic music producer or interested in producing bands, the Diploma of Music Production will sharpen your music production skills.
Through hands-on training, we’ll help you amplify your talents, refine your skills and be industry ready in a matter of months. You’ll be guided by master lecturers who will train you in music production and sound design techniques, while also giving you great insight into the music industry.
As part of your course you’ll work collaboratively with your peers to record a local music group of your choosing. You’ll have the skills to prepare a production brief and be able to apply your music production skills to satisfy a commercial client brief.
Upon completion you will be eligible for up to 80 credit points towards either the Bachelor of Audio (Studio production) or Bachelor of Audio (Post Production).
SAE has implemented a remote flexible learning option for current and future students. The range of tools developed by SAE will not only allow students to collaborate online but also gain experience in remote working practices widely used within the creative industries.

Mo'funk The DJ is an SAE audio graduate who has held down DJ residencies in Ibiza for the last nine seasons. Space Ibiza, Pacha, Cafe Mambo and Café del Mar are some of the spots he has performed.
Mo has supported all the big music legends from Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, Mark Ronson, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Carl Cox, Dj Sneak, and Crazy P, to Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Kenny Dope, Todd Terry and Nightmares on Wax.

You will learn
Throughout your hands-on course you will gain an introduction to:
- Music theory including an understanding of musical form and structure, the way the human auditory system functions and how sound behaves in enclosed spaces and free-fields.
- An understanding of the key features and elements of different music genres and styles.
- Aspects of rhythm, harmony and melody, aspects of notation, transcription, structure, form and texture.
- How to develop a recognition of groove, musical form, tonality and chord progressions.
- Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) transcription to reproduce musical ideas.
- Operating a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) console, recording techniques, sampling and recontextualising sounds, making sounds from scratch and composing or arranging original music.
- How to mix and blend a variety of sounds for different purposes and how to add effects to enhance a mix.
- The appropriate technical language used in music production and analysis.
- Writing a production brief and conducting a location recording.
- Working in accordance with a client driven brief.

Entry requirements
Applicants for Diploma courses must satisfy one of the following minimum entry criteria:
- Completion of an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (SSCE) or equivalent, OR
- Completion of a certificate IV level qualification issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), OR
- Experience Based Entry for applicants who do not meet the requirements above. 'Enquire Now' or call 1800 723 338 directly for more information.
Under section 6.8 of the Student Progression, Exclusion and Graduation Policy, SAE reserves the right to apply conditional enrollments to students who apply to SAE via alternative entry. The Academic Coordinator will determine an appropriate set of support mechanisms for each student, based on individual experience and merit.

Additional Entry Requirements to the Diploma of Music Production
In addition to the above requirements, students wishing to enrol in the Music Production Diploma will also be invited to participate in an interview and audition process.
This process will help to establish underlying music skills and knowledge as well as program suitability. Remote interviews can be arranged for international students. Students can submit a portfolio of work as an alternative to the audition.
Portfolios may include;
- Links to your music or musical performances Youtube, Soundcloud etc.
- Links to online portfolio pages
- Statement providing an overview of existing skills and knowledge in music production, including examples from senior secondary music classes, AMEB & CPM certification, appointment in school orchestra’s or bands etc
